Abstract:
Following the current research trends and the European Robotics Research Roadmap (https://www.eu-robotics.net/sparc/about/roadmap/index.html), the research topics investigated by the research lines in Robotics and Autonomous Systems at DIBRIS include:

  • • How the robot or autonomous system senses the environment. In particular: sensor technologies to be employed within robots; models and algorithms for sensor data representation, reasoning, learning, and interpretation; multisensory integration; sensor-based state and parameter estimation;
  • • How the robot moves and interacts with the environment. Specifically: robot control models and algorithms, action and motion planning and execution, paradigms for physical interaction with other robots, objects and people;
  • • How the robot interacts with humans. In particular: paradigms for verbal and non-verbal interaction and communication by taking into account the user’s personality, emotions, and cultural identity; the integration of robots into smart ICT environments; ethical, legal and social implications of the use of robots;
  • • How hardware and software components are integrated. In particular: distributed and networked hardware and frameworks for real-time control of robots and autonomous systems, real-time architectures for task scheduling and communication; robots and Internet Of Things.

The research projects are currently focused on innovative enabling technologies and on various application domains, including: Robotics for Industry 4.0 manufacturing; marine applications, including surface and underwater robotics; health-care, in particular to assist older persons; Search&Rescue.
