Systems Engineering (SE)

art of Takoshi Suigushi

This research line includes a set of research activities referred to different application fields but characterized by a common approach for modelling, optimization and control of complex systems. In particular, the research activities on systems engineering encompass the development of dynamic models for the simulation and prediction of complex distributed systems, characterized by uncertainties, the definition of optimization approaches, also in multi-objective contexts and in cases of multiple decision makers, for planning such systems, until the definition of suitable algorithms for the real-time control. The main application contexts are referred to:

  • • transport and logistic systems: the main focus is on urban and extra-urban traffic systems, transportation of dangerous goods, freight intermodal transportation on logistic networks and, in general, vehicle routing problems
  • • energy systems: the systems engineering methodologies are applied to large-scale smart energy networks, polygeneration microgrids, electric vehicles, charging stations, energy production from renewable sources, energy storage systems
  • • environmental systems: the main applications involve natural and industrial risk management, natural source management and waste disposal
  • • production systems: planning and scheduling problems for manufacturing systems are investigated, considering also sustainability-related issues
