Visual perception and ecological interaction in Virtual and Augmented Reality: open issues and challenges

Abstract:
One of the goals of the research in the field of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) is to be able, in the near future, to interact with virtual objects that blend with the real world in the most natural way possible. In this talk, I will discuss the main open issues in the field of natural and ecological interaction in virtual and augmented environments. I will briefly review the main perceptual issues that affect such environments, and how such issues can hamper an effective interaction. In particular, I will present: (i) some experiments for the evaluation of the undesired effects arising from the use of VR systems, and the possible indication for the development of systems that weaken such issues; (ii) some experiments to assess depth perception in VR/AR systems, the consequence of such mis-perception on interaction, and the solutions we are devising in order to cope with such issues.
