Keep Calm and Relax: the Role of Relaxation in Large-Scale Data Management

Abstract:
Since its inception 25 years ago, Approximate Query Processing (AQP) and, as a special case, Relaxed Query Processing have always been an active area of research. Recently, AQP has gained substantial attention in the commercial world as well. Indeed, in spite many existing systems and frameworks for large-scale data management and processing exist, with sufficiently large datasets even the fastest system can take hours or days to answer the simplest queries. This response time is simply unacceptable to many users and applications and AQP techniques are often the only valuable alternative. In this talk, the role of AQP and Relaxation for large-scale data management will be discussed and, as an example of application of such concepts, a relaxed smart caching approach for graph-based data will be shortly presented.
